As school leaders, you are often at the center of a critical incident and are responsible for managing the crisis. A thorough understanding of the key steps in a Critical Incident Response and Management, the importance of a trauma-informed, unified response, and proactive policies/procedures is integral.
The Critical Incident Response Management training is designed to help schools and districts navigate critical incidents with intentional care and consistent practices. Over time, our understanding of wise practice shifts, and it is crucial that staff continue to expand their knowledge of caring responses through ongoing professional development and consultation with community partners and educational leaders. Participants in the CIRM training will gain access to a companion toolkit to use beyond the session.
This training is for current District and Staff Critical Incident Teams as well as other administrators, counsellors, and lead staff who wish to gain skills in supporting school communities through critical incidents.
Participants will be able to:
- Develop an understanding of critical incident response and management through the lenses of a trauma-informed approach, unified response, and equity.
- Define a critical incident and understand the impact of systems methodology, climate & culture, and trauma in determining a response.
- Identify the differences between school and district critical incident teams, and the strengths and stretches of various district response models.
- Understand the important considerations involved in the 6 steps to Critical Incident Response and Management: initial anchor meeting, confirmation of event, roles and responsibilities, digital assessment, communication, and transition considerations.
- Consider more complex critical incident implications, including but not limited to: multiple sites, cultural considerations, media scrutiny, ongoing police investigations, and complex community responses.
- Understand the importance of proactively aligning policy and procedures to best practice for critical incident response and management.
- Become familiar with the Critical Incident Response and Management toolkit
